Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, facing a tough re-election bid in one of the states hardest hit by the recession, said today that the economic downturn was not his fault.

"I had nothing to do with the massive foreclosures here," Reid said during an appearance on the ABC News/Washington Post "Top Line" program, adding that he also had no part in contributing to the state's dismal unemployment figures.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) said Tuesday a nationwide renewable-electricity standard, or RES, is “absolutely” in the mix as he tries to salvage energy legislation this year — possibly in a lame-duck session.

Before the August recess, Reid said he doubted an RES — which would require utilities to provide escalating amounts of power from sources like wind and solar energy — could win 60 votes. It was left on the cutting-room floor when Reid unveiled a modest energy bill in late July.

A protest of Maricopa County Sheriff Joseph Arpaio’s visit to Las Vegas on Friday became heated when the Arizona lawman tried to talk to participants. Chants of “go home” and “leave” were directed at Arpaio as he approached the group rallying outside of Stoney’s Rockin’ Country bar, where he was speaking to a conservative group. “I have a right to be in Las Vegas,” Arpaio said. “If I told them to go home, I’d be the bad guy.”

Arpaio said he doesn’t understand why there was a protest of Arizona’s law. No one is asking for anyone’s papers unless they commit a crime, he said. “I should be a hero,” Arpaio said. “They should be thanking me.”
Protesters allege Arpaio is racist and harasses people based on the color of their skin.

LAS VEGAS — Morris Jeppson, a weapons test officer aboard the Enola Gay who helped arm the atomic bomb dropped over Hiroshima, has died in a Las Vegas hospital. He was 87.

Molly Jeppson, the wife of the Air Force second lieutenant who flew only one combat mission, told The Associated Press on Thursday that her husband died March 30 at Summerlin Hospital Medical Center.
